Welcome to Fairmont-Hahntown Volunteer Fire Department's Fire Prevention Page!

At Fairmont-Hahntown VFD, your safety is our priority. We aim to provide the community with valuable information to help prevent fires and protect lives and property. Explore our fire prevention tips for children, adults, senior citizens, and seasonal and holiday safety below.

Fire Prevention for Children

Teaching Kids About Fire Safety:

  1. Stop, Drop, and Roll: Teach children to stop, drop, and roll if their clothes catch fire.
  2. Fire Drills: Practice fire drills at home regularly. Make sure children know two ways to escape from every room.
  3. Matches and Lighters: Keep matches and lighters out of reach. Teach children that these items are not toys.
  4. Smoke Alarms: Teach children the sound of smoke alarms and what to do when they hear one.
  5. 911: Teach children how to call 911 and provide their address in an emergency.

Fire Prevention for Adults

Home Safety Tips:

  1. Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly.
  2. Escape Plan: Create and practice a home fire escape plan with all family members.
  3. Cooking Safety: Never leave cooking unattended. Keep flammable items away from the stove.
  4. Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading electrical outlets. Replace damaged cords immediately.
  5. Heaters: Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Fire Prevention for Senior Citizens

Special Considerations:

  1. Easy Access: Ensure pathways are clear for easy access to exits. Avoid clutter that can hinder quick evacuation.
  2. Hearing and Vision: Consider smoke alarms with strobe lights or bed shakers for those with hearing impairments. Ensure good lighting for clear visibility.
  3. Mobility Aids: Keep mobility aids such as walkers and canes near the bed.
  4. Medication: Store medication safely and away from heat sources.
  5. Assistance: Arrange for someone to check on elderly loved ones regularly, especially those living alone.

Seasonal and Holiday Safety

Winter Safety:

  1. Heating Equipment: Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a professional.
  2. Holiday Decorations: Use non-flammable decorations. Keep lit candles away from decorations and other flammable materials.
  3. Christmas Trees: Keep real trees well-watered. Keep trees and decorations away from heat sources.

Spring and Summer Safety:

  1. Grilling: Keep grills away from the house, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Never leave a grill unattended.
  2. Fire Pits: Use fire pits safely by keeping them away from structures and vegetation. Never leave a fire pit unattended.

Autumn Safety:

  1. Halloween: Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-o-lanterns. Ensure costumes are flame-resistant.
  2. Leaves: Rake leaves away from your home and dispose of them properly. Never burn leaves.

Holiday Safety:

  1. Christmas Lights: Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires or broken sockets. Do not overload electrical outlets.
  2. Candles: Use battery-operated candles. If using real candles, never leave them unattended and keep them away from flammable materials.
  3. Fireplaces: Have chimneys inspected and cleaned annually. Use a screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
